The 22nd Annual Coast Guard Day 5K held at Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown, VA on Saturday morning, August 7, 2010. The race event was organized by the Coast Guard Training Center MWR. The race itself was conducted and results were generated by the Peninsula Track Club. Conditions at race time were sunny and humid with temperatures in the 80s. 240 runners entered the 5K (down slightly from 258 in 2009 possibly due to the recent hot and humid weather) with 221 completing the race (down from 241 in 2009). The race started near the gym on the Coast Guard base, went out the front gate onto the Yorktown Battlefield, making a loop that went downhill to the Wormley Creek Dam, then back uphill
towards the Moore house before returning to the Coast Guard Base through the main gate, finishing at the gym. The course was a USATF certified 5K
course (USATF cert. # VA-98020-RT) and was followed correctly by the runners. Awards for both male and female were given to the top 3 runners overall, top 3 runners in each age group, and top three active duty Coast Guard personnel. Two course records were set despite the hot, humid conditions.

For the men, Bill Fenwick, 77 of Williamsburg broke the age group course record for Men 75-79 previously set by Tom Ray of Kitty Hawk, NC in 2009. Fenwick’s impressive time of 25:37 shattered Ray’s mark of 28:30. For the women, Mercedes Castillo-D’Amico, 52 of Newport News, VA broke the age group course record for Women 50-54 for the third year in a row. In 2008 at the age of 50, Mercedes set the age group course record for Women 50-54 with a time of 21:13. Then in 2009 when she was 51, she bettered that mark with a time of 21:12. This year she moved the age group course record for Women 50-54 even lower with a time of 21:01which placed her as 1st Overall Woman as well. The Coast Guard Day 5K was also the 7th Grand Prix race of the Peninsula Track Club 2010 Grand Prix Race – a series of 12 road racing events during the year that determine the PTC Grand Prix Champion.
