Below are the award winners for the 35th Annual Mulberry Island Half Marathon & 5K held at Fort Eustis on Saturday morning, September 17, 2016. The race was sponsored by the Fort Eustis MWR. The Mulberry Island Half Marathon is the 9th and longest race of the 12-race 2016 Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix. It was also one of the twelve races in the Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix put on jointly by the Tidewater Striders, Colonial Road Runners and Peninsula Track Club.
Both courses start and finish near Anderson Fieldhouse on Fort Eustis. Conditions for both races were sunny and pleasent with a breeze, slightly humid and temperatures in the low 70s.
The Half Marathon course is the same as in 2015 and is USATF certified (VA14019RT). The 5K course was basically the same as last year, but run in the reverse direction so runners in both the Half Marathon and 5K approached the finish line at Anderson Fieldhouse from the same direction. The adjustments to the 5K were accurately measured, but the course is not USATF certified at this time.
A total of 236 runners entered the races, 158 in the Half Marathon and 78 in the 5K with 142 runners completing the Half Marathon and 70 runners completed the 5K.
In the Half Marathon, the 1st Male was Roger Hopper, 25 of Williamsburg with a time of 1:19:31 (6:04 pace). 2nd Male was Wayne Parfitt, 51of Newport News, VA with a time of 1:21:51. 3rd Male went to Ryan Doupe, 3 of Newport News, VA in 1:25:46.
For the Women in the Half Marathon, 1st place went to Samantha Popovich, 28 of Newport News, VA with a time of 1:34:09. 2nd Place for the Woman went to Jennifer Anderson, 35 of Poquoson, VA in 1:36:29 with 3rd place going to Debbie McLaughlin, 50 of Williamsburg, VA in 1:39:32.
In the 5K, 1st Place Overall for the men was Steven Armitage, 47 of Norfolk, VA with a time of 19:32 (6:18 pace). 2nd place went to Grant Boyd, 32 of Long Beach, CA with a time of 19:50 followed by Derrick Dixon, 36 of Yorktown who finished in 20:10.
For the Women in the 5K, the most notable performache was from Octavia Rinehardt, 26 of Virginia Beach , VA who was not only 1st Woman, but was the 1st runner overall in the 5K with a time of 18:34 (5:59 pace). It is also notable that Octavia Rinehardt was the Women’s winner in both the 2014 and 2015 Mulberry Island Half Marathons. 2nd Woman in the 5K went to Karla Havens, 54 of Plainview, VA with a time of 22:35. 3rd Womand was Lauren Contreras, 19 of Vernon, CT in 24:15
